Monday, 27 June 2011 0 comments

SINGAPORE - SIM University (UniSIM) and Business China are offering five new scholarships to help nurture young Singaporeans who can be bilingual and bi-cultural professionals. The scholarships - which will be awarded to five recipients for a start - are for Chinese-related degree programmes, such as Chinese Language and Literature, Translation and Interpretation, as well as Early Childhood Chinese Language Education. The scholarships, which are bond-free, will cover up to 80 per cent of total course fees.

The scholarships are for Business China members and staff of corporate members who are non-degree holders.

This is the first time Business China is working with an educational institution. Business China chief executive officer Low Yen Ling said: "The second thing we'll do is work with UniSIM to see how in the longer term we can scale this beyond five students and five modules that they can choose from."

Ms Low, who is also a Member of Parliament for Chua Chu Kang GRC, added that the non-profit organisation is "exploring similar partnerships with other esteemed educational partners". Read More

Hands-On: My Friend Is My Enemy in Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One Online

Monday, 20 June 2011 0 comments

I played the PlayStation 3 title alongside a member of the Insomniac Games development team at E3 Expo earlier this month. The two of us had a hell of a time jumping and shooting our way through Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One’s well-designed platforming levels. While we chased the monstrous Z’Grute beast through the city, we engaged in (somewhat) friendly competition to see who could collect the most Bolts, the game’s form of currency.

Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One, which Sony will publish Oct. 18, can support up to four players at once. After Ratchet and Clank themselves, your third and fourth players will be series co-stars Captain Qwark and Doctor Nefarious. The health meters of the enemies you encounter will be raised or lowered based on the number of players.

Players can team up and compete with one another both locally and online, and you can expect to frequently shift between screaming and hugging, depending how much you secretly hate your friends.

Though the idea is to get together and take on levels as a team, it’s more fun to think of All 4 One as a race to see who can get the most points. In order to collect those precious Bolts, you’ll have to break crates and kill enemies before your partners beat you to them. (This push-and-pull between cooperation and competition is similar to The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures, a GameCube title that Nintendo will release for DSiWare in September.) Read More

Woodleigh MRT Station
Woodleigh MRT Station (NE11) is a underground Mass Rapid Transit station of the North East Line, located on part of the former Bidadari Cemetery. When the North-East Line opened, it was one of the fully-completed MRT stations in the entire system that was non-operational. The Art In Transit artwork in this station is listed as Slow Motion by April Ng Kiow Ngor. Part of the station's interior was shown on an episode of Building the Biggest on Discovery Channel. It is estimated that if the station was opened, its daily ridership would still be under the 2,000 general benchmark deemed necessary for a station to make economic sense to operate. However, on March 8, 2011, SBS Transit announced the opening of the station on June 20, 2011.

After the maintenance on the lifts, escalators and fare gates were conducted and the platform polished on the eve of the grand opening, the station finally became operational to celebrate the 8th anniversary of the entire line which started in 2003, excluding Buangkok station. Published information in the Singapore Master Plan as well as several reports in the newspapers have mentioned a planned major housing project where the former Bidadari Cemetery sat. Currently, existing nearby condominiums include Avon Park, Euro-Asia Park and Blossoms at Woodleigh. There are also several new condominium projects under development in the area including, Parc Mondrian on Woodleigh Close and 8@Woodleigh. Other buildings around it include a Salvation Army stockhouse, and a few shophouses.

Sina Weibo launches Klout-like analytics platform
Sina Weibo has just launched its new Klout-like robust analytics tool for its 140 million users so that they can track and monitor data about their Weibo accounts.

Accessible at data.weibo.com, the analytics platform allows users to monitor their own accounts on a weekly basis that is presented in different categories. First and foremost, it offers an official user rating similar to Klout, which is based on influence, amplification, and reach.

It also tracks follower activities including the top 10 topics they’re interested in, gender ratio, geographic location and tags. It also tracks comments and retweets, displaying the top 10 most active followers and a user’s follower growth trend.

Lastly there’s the weekly Top Weibos and top trending topics.

It certainly gives a new dimension to Sina Weibo as users can now have an offical quantitative and qualitative ratings on how they use their accounts. Something Twitter can learn from them, perhaps?

Check out this infographic that details the features of the new Sina Weibo Data Services from TechRice:

Electrocardiograph (ECG or EKG) - yök, adalet bakanlığı, aiö, meteoroloji, oyunus

Tuesday, 14 June 2011 0 comments

Electrocardiograph (ECG or EKG [from the German Elektrokardiogramm]) is a transthoracic interpretation of the electrical activity of the heart over time captured and externally recorded by skin electrodes.[1] It is a noninvasive recording produced by an electrocardiographic device. The etymology of the word is derived from the Greek electro, because it is related to electrical activity, cardio, Greek for heart, and graph, a Greek root meaning "to write". In English speaking countries, medical professionals often write EKG (the abbreviation for the German word elektrokardiogramm) in order to avoid confusion with EEG.[citation needed]

The ECG works mostly by detecting and amplifying the tiny electrical changes on the skin that are caused when the heart muscle "depolarizes" during each heart beat. At rest, each heart muscle cell has a charge across its outer wall, or cell membrane. Reducing this charge towards zero is called de-polarization, which activates the mechanisms in the cell that cause it to contract. During each heartbeat a healthy heart will have an orderly progression of a wave of depolarisation that is triggered by the cells in the sinoatrial node, spreads out through the atrium, passes through "intrinsic conduction pathways" and then spreads all over the ventricles. This is detected as tiny rises and falls in the voltage between two electrodes placed either side of the heart which is displayed as a wavy line either on a screen or on paper. This display indicates the overall rhythm of the heart and weaknesses in different parts of the heart muscle.

Usually more than 2 electrodes are used and they can be combined into a number of pairs (For example: Left arm (LA), right arm (RA) and left leg (LL) electrodes form the three pairs LA+RA, LA+LL, and RA+LL). The output from each pair is known as a lead. Each lead is said to look at the heart from a different angle. Different types of ECGs can be referred to by the number of leads that are recorded, for example 3-lead, 5-lead or 12-lead ECGs (sometimes simply "a 12-lead"). A 12-lead ECG is one in which 12 different electrical signals are recorded at approximately the same time and will often be used as a one-off recording of an ECG, traditionally printed out as a paper copy. 3- and 5-lead ECGs tend to be monitored continuously and viewed only on the screen of an appropriate monitoring device, for example during an operation or whilst being transported in an ambulance. There may or may not be any permanent record of a 3- or 5-lead ECG, depending on the equipment used.

It is the best way to measure and diagnose abnormal rhythms of the heart,[2] particularly abnormal rhythms caused by damage to the conductive tissue that carries electrical signals, or abnormal rhythms caused by electrolyte imbalances.[3] In a myocardial infarction (MI), the ECG can identify if the heart muscle has been damaged in specific areas, though not all areas of the heart are covered.[4] The ECG cannot reliably measure the pumping ability of the heart, for which ultrasound-based (echocardiography) or nuclear medicine tests are used. It is possible to be in cardiac arrest with a normal ECG signal (a condition known as pulseless electrical activity). Read More

Heart With No Beat Offers Hope Of New Lease On Life
The search for the perfect artificial heart seems never-ending. After decades of trial and error, surgeons remain stymied in their quest for a machine that does not wear out, break down or cause clots and infections. But Dr. Billy Cohn and Dr. Bud Frazier at the Texas Heart Institute say they have developed a machine that could avoid all that with simple whirling rotors — which means people may soon get a heart that has no beat.

Inside the institute's animal research laboratory is an 8-month-old calf with a soft brown coat named Abigail. Cohn and Frazier removed Abigail's heart and replaced it with two centrifugal pumps. "If you listened to her chest with a stethoscope, you wouldn't hear a heartbeat," says Cohn. "If you examined her arteries, there's no pulse. If you hooked her up to an EKG, she'd be flat-lined."

The pumps spin Abigail's blood and move it through her body. "By every metric we have to analyze patients, she's not living," Cohn says. "But here you can see she's a vigorous, happy, playful calf licking my hand." Read More

C++のテンプレート本が発売された。id:faith_and_braveさんと、επιστημηさん(→ http://blogs.wankuma.com/episteme/ )の共著。

内容的には、C++のtemplateの初心者がModern C++ Design―ジェネリック・プログラミングおよびデザイン・パターンを利用するための究極のテンプレート活用術 (C++ In‐Depth Series)や、C++ Template Metaprogramming: Concepts, Tools, And Techniques From Boost And Beyond (C++ in Depth Series)を理解するための橋渡し的な本だと思う。「Modern C++ design」に途中で挫折した人には特にお勧めしたい。

Read More

All's cool again at Resorts World Sentosa
THE air conditioning is back to normal for most of the shops at Resorts World Sentosa (RWS) on Saturday, as it was largely restored the day before.

However, a couple of restaurants have commented that temperatures were still not ideal.

Last Monsday (May 31), the chiller units at RWS malfunctioned due to a motor breakdown, affecting Universal Studios theme park, several shows, retail and food outlets for the last few days.

A check by The Straits Times found that the portable air-conditioners and mobile blowers supplied by the resort's management to help keep temperatures down were still being used in many of the outlets.

However, RWS has explained that individual tenants are able to adjust the temperature according to their needs, so temperatures may vary. Read More

Deadliest Catch Runescape Singapore

Deadliest Catch is a master quest that was released on June 7 2011, and first announced in the June Behind the Scenes. It requires level 70 Fishing, level 70 Thieving and level 67 Hunter as well as the quests Tower of Life and Druidic Ritual. Players must face a sea monster named Thalassus, a name on which players voted at the end of May 2011 in a guaranteed content poll. This quest raised the minimum level for the Quest point cape for Hunter by 2 levels from 65 to 67 and Fishing by 8 levels from 62 to 70.

Eager to try out a new item slot? Forget rings, quivers or shoe slots: if you're fashionable you'll want an aura slot! Before the release of these buffing items, there'll be two other updates in which you'll have to overcome some imposing obstacles: a sea monster in our newest master quest, and a troll invasion in a new distraction and diversion.

Deadliest Catch
This month's master members quest will ring bells for anyone interested in the guaranteed content polls. As named by you, the sea monster Thalassus has been terrorising the cold and inhospitable oceans to the north. No one has survived to sketch a picture of this hulking beast, but the inns are full of rumours: Thalassus is the size of the Wizards' Tower, they say; sailors are eaten and digested while still alive in its belly.

Fisherman Jones wants to end the scare stories by landing the beast (gaining a little glory in the process). To join him, you'll need a Fishing level of 70, a Hunter level of 67 and a Thieving level of 60, and there's wieldable fishing nets on offer, and a range of bank deposit boxes to unlock if you do. The quest also offers you the opportunity to embark ten more times for additional Hunter XP, should you prove to be an enviable harpooner.

Troll Invasion
Forget forum trolls: if you want a real nuisance, you can't beat the real thing! Trolls are swarming down the hills of Burthorpe and are threatening to lay waste to any imperial guard that gets in their way. Who can stop them? Well, you, of course, but in two very different ways. This month's single-player distraction and diversion for members allows you to choose between taking the trolls on in straight combat, or tending the defences that hold them back. Better still, there are no requirements to do so.

Take to the battlefield and you will face 20 waves of increasingly belligerent trolls, from the common mountain troll to the summoning troll, dynamite troll and Cliff, who – you've probably guessed – ate an entire cliff face for his first meal. If that proves too easy, there's a more intense 7 wave version to conquer, which has an increased difficulty level.

For the skill-focussed among you, there is the option of keeping the gatehouse maintained instead. Tend to the ballista, top up the oil vats and repair broken barricades to keep the trolls from being successful. Your actions will increase the morale of the troops, who will fight back with increased vigour. Hold out for 10 minutes (the time it takes for a troll to get hungry for Burntmeat's cooking) and the victory is yours. You will gain an XP tome for your first defence each month, and smaller XP rewards for any defence you complete after that.

Loyalty Rewards
Last but not least, this month sees a huge selection of exciting rewards that you'll be able to access through the Members Loyalty Program. Earn Loyalty Points to unlock a fantastic range of items, from custom titles to unique emotes, exclusive new costumes and amazing auras in a new player worn slot.
Don't forget to register within the first two weeks of launch to take advantage of our introductory offers on the fantastic selection of rewards!  Read More

Scientific Method, Branches Of Biology

Biological classification, or scientific classification in biology, is a method by which biologists group and categorize organisms by biological type, such as genus or species. Biological classification is a form of scientific taxonomy.

Modern biological classification has its root in the work of Carolus Linnaeus, who grouped species according to shared physical characteristics. These groupings have since been revised to improve consistency with the Darwinian principle of common descent. Molecular phylogenetics, which uses DNA sequences as data, has driven many recent revisions and is likely to continue to do so. Biological classification belongs to the science of biological systematics.

Definition
Classification has been defined by Mayr as "The arrangement of entities in a hierarchical series of nested classes, in which similar or related classes at one hierarchical level are combined comprehensively into more inclusive classes at the next higher level." A class is defined as "a collection of similar entities", where the similarity consists of the entities having attributes or traits in common.

What makes biological classification different from other classification systems (e.g. classifying books in a library) is evolution: the similarity between organisms placed in the same taxon is not arbitrary, but is instead a result of shared descent from their nearest common ancestor. Accordingly the important attributes or traits for biological classification are those which are 'homologous', i.e. inherited from common ancestors. These must be separated from traits that are analogous. Thus birds and bats both have the power of flight, but this similarity is not used to classify them into a taxon (a "class")], because it is not inherited from a common ancestor. In spite of all the other differences between them, the fact that bats and whales both feed their young on milk is one of the features used to classify both as mammals, since it was inherited from a common ancestor.

Determining whether similarities are homologous or analogous or not can be difficult. Thus until recently, golden moles, found in South Africa, were placed in the same taxon (insectivores) as Northern Hemisphere moles, on the basis of morphological and behavioural similarities. However, molecular analysis has shown that they are not closely related, so that their similarities must be due to convergent evolution and not to shared descent, and so should not be used to place them in the same taxon.  Read More

Windows 8 - Microsoft starts sharing Windows 8 plans with PC partners

Microsoft starts sharing Windows 8 plans with PC partners : Microsoft’s next version of Windows client is far enough along that the Windows team seems to have begun sharing details about its goals with Microsoft’s PC partners. A leaked slide deck — excerpts of which first appeared on the Web site of blogger Francisco Martin Garcia — don’t reveal a whole lot in terms of specific features. But they do look like the real deal, as Microsoft Kitchen blogger Stephen Chapman — who pulled out even more of the slides in his post — noted.

The leaked slides (dating from April 2010) reference “Windows 8,” not “Windows v.Next” (the Windows client team’s preferred codename these days). They indicate that the next version of Windows, which is expected by many to ship in 2012, will possibly offer some of these features:
  • Fast startup (Huzzah!): A new feature combining Logoff and Hibernate to result will give the look and feel of boot/shutdown be faster
  • Slates mentioned specifically as a target form factor: It will be interesting to see how Microsoft distinguishes between slates running Windows Embedded Compact and slates running Windows 8
  • Push-button reset: A button “that will essentially reinstall Windows while maintaining all of your personal files, applications, settings, etc. without the need for the user to back all of that stuff up,” as Stephen Chapman of Microsoft Kitchen describes it
  • Support for facial recognition as one of the ways identity management/log in will be handled
  • IE 9 (no surprise there): With another confirmation of August as being the target for the first beta (though I could see this possibly slipping a bit)
  • More thorough help and support, enabling users to do more fixing of issues on their own
  • A Windows App Store (mentioned in the section on push-button reset)
Microsoft isn’t commenting (so far) on the slides and isn’t even confirming that they are “Genuine” Windows 8 PowerPoints — or how much they reflect current reality. However, I’d note the date on these slides is April 2010 and they sure have the vague look and feel of early Windows documentation.  Read More

Technology Development Of Rockets And Satellites In Japan

The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (独立行政法人宇宙航空研究開発機構 Dokuritsu-gyōsei-hōjin Uchū Kōkū Kenkyū Kaihatsu Kikō), literally "Independent Administrative Institution on Aerospace Research and Development "), or JAXA, is Japan's national aerospace agency. Through the merger of three previously independent organizations, JAXA was formed on October 1, 2003, as an Independent Administrative Institution administered by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) and the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC). JAXA is responsible for research, technology development and the launch of satellites into orbit, and is involved in many more advanced missions, such as asteroid exploration and possible manned exploration of the Moon. Its motto is One JAXA and its corporate slogan is Reaching for the skies, exploring space.

History
On October 1, 2003, three organizations were merged to form the new JAXA: Japan's Institute of Space and Astronautical Science (or ISAS), the National Aerospace Laboratory of Japan (NAL), and National Space Development Agency of Japan (NASDA).

Before the merger, ISAS was responsible for space and planetary research, while NAL was focused on aviation research. NASDA, which was founded on October 1, 1969, had developed rockets, satellites, and also built the Japanese Experiment Module. The old NASDA headquarters were located at the current site of the Tanegashima Space Center, on Tanegashima Island, 115 kilometers south of Kyūshū. NASDA also trained Japanese astronauts, who flew with the US Space Shuttles.

Rockets
JAXA uses the H-IIA (H "two" A) rocket from the former NASDA body to launch engineering test satellites, weather satellites, etc. For science missions like X-ray astronomy, JAXA has been using the M-V ("Mu-five") solid-fueled rocket from the former ISAS. For experiments in the upper atmosphere JAXA uses the SS-520, S-520, and S-310 sounding rockets. Read More
