Simona Halep Talks Breast-Reduction Surgery After Wimbledon Loss
After losing to Serena Williams in the second round at Wimbledon, 19-year-old Simona Halep talked about her recent rise in the world tennis rankings and credited the breast-reduction surgery she had two years ago.

"My ability to react quickly was worse, and my breasts made me uncomfortable," Halep said. "It's the weight that troubles me. My breasts made me uncomfortable when I play."

She also said that she would have gone through with the surgery even if she hadn't been a "sportswoman."

The Romanian attracted plenty of attention during the 2008 French Open when she had 34DD breasts. But the tennis star's chest caused "severe back pain," so she had breast-reduction surgery in 2009 and returned to the 2010 French Open with 34C breasts.

New York Daily News writer Flip Bondy pointed out that Halep has climbed 450 spots in the rankings to No. 57 since the surgery. Read More

Tennis Player Simona Halep Was Unhappy With Her Breasts
Serena Williams won her second round match against Simona Halep 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 yesterday. Afterward, the 19-year-old Halep spoke about her breasts, namely the decision to have them reduced.

Halep nonetheless is a teenager on the rise. She has ascended 450 spots in the rankings, to No. 57, and credits breast-reduction surgery of two years ago for the surge.

"My ability to react quickly was worse, and my breasts made me uncomfortable," the 19-year-old said. "It's the weight that troubles me. My breasts made me uncomfortable when I play. I don't like them in my everyday life, either. I would have gone for surgery even if I hadn't been a sportswoman."

Fair enough, though one might well question whether a teenager ought to be making such inalterable medical decisions. Read More

Lion City Cup football: Singapore U15 come from behind to beat Newcastle U15 4-3
That’s how long the Singapore U-15 boys needed to turn a 3-1 deficit into a 4-3 victory at the 23rd Lion City Cup. Newcastle led 2-1 at half time and when they scored their third goal to lead 3-1, it looked like game over. However, our local boys, clad in blue, scored twice in stoppage time to delight the strong, vocal and provocative home supporters.

Newcastle took the lead as early as the fourth minute and although Singapore equalized soon after, Newcastle made the most of their few chances to go up 3-1 just after the hour mark. However, the national U-15 side showed their character and determination to grab all three points in the end.
Singapore U15 Lineup
Heirul Suhanes (#1), Ehvin Sasidharan (#2), Mahathir Azeman (#3), Sadik Said (#4), R Aarvin (#5), Amirul Azmi (#6), Zulfadhmi Suzliman (#7), Muhelmy Suhaimi (#8), Irfan Iezran (#9), Adam Swandi (#10), Azhar Ramli (#11)

Newcastle U15 Lineup
Sam Busby (#1), Liam Gibson (#3), Ben Drennan (#4), Benjamin Askins (#5), James Atkinson (#6), Greg Olley (#7), Jordan Storey (#8), Alex Gillead (#9), Adam Armstrong (#10), Dean Briggs (#11), Callum Roberts (#14)
“We are not surprised with the performance of the boys. As long as they play to their ability, they will do very well,” said Glusevic Dejan, coach of the Cubs.

It was a jittery start by the Singapore boys though. Although they showed that they were not afraid to get physical, it was clear that Newcastle were a handful for Aaravin’s (Singapore U15 #5) defense, as he admitted later after the match.

True enough, a harmless looking corner into the six yard box was fluffed by goalkeeper Heirul Suhanes (Singapore U15 #1) and James Atkinson (Newcastle U15 #6) scored the first goal of the match following a goal mouth scramble.

A lesser team would have folded but the Singapore boys remained calm and came up with an equalizer nine minutes later. A counter-attack by the home side was directed to Zulfadhmi Suzliman (Singapore U15 #7) on the right flank. Realizing that he was outnumbered, he smartly cut inside as he waited for his onrushing teammates. The play found its way to Azhar Ramli (Singapore U15 #11) whose curled shot agonizingly hit the right post. However, Zulfadhmi was on hand to volley home the rebound to complete the sweet move himself.

Heriul Suhanes recovered from his earlier mistake to make a couple of crucial saves, notably a one-on-one in the 20th minute, as the Cubs settled down.

Newcastle, playing a direct style of football, made full use of their physicality and their two forwards always looked dangerous when given time and space. A prime example came in the 31st minute when Aarvin was careless and got caught out at the back by Alex Gillead (Newcastle U15 #9). Gillead selflessly squared it for Adam Armstrong (Newcastle U15 #10) who made it 2-1 for Newcastle.

Singapore had more than their fair share of chances through Azhar Ramli but he couldn’t capitalize. Twice, he was put through one-on-one with the Newcastle keeper, and twice he missed. Read More

Standard Chartered Marathon 2011 - Standard Chartered Bank pledges S$9.75m until 2013 for Singapore Marathon

Standard Chartered Bank announced a S$9.75 million sponsorship of the Standard Chartered Marathon Singapore (SCMS) until 2013. This is the largest-ever corporate sponsorship for a running event in Singapore. Standard Chartered Bank’s long-term commitment with marathons spans over a decade, with the bank backing nine marathons globally, including the SCMS. The three-year sponsorship deal for the SCMS is one of the bank’s largest and on-going sponsorships of a sports event in Singapore.

CEO of the Singapore Sports Council, Mr Lim Teck Yin, who is also the Chairman of the SCMS 2011 Organising Committee, thanked Standard Chartered Bank for their unwavering support of sports in Singapore. Apart from the SCMS, Standard Chartered Bank is also a long term supporter of Singapore Rugby, having contributed more than S$3 million since 1997 to support the growth of youth rugby in Singapore.

Said Mr Lim: “The SCMS is one of SSC’s and Singapore’s most successful and recognisable partnerships with a major corporation. The marathon is an excellent example of how sports can raise brand awareness, build market share and win customer loyalty for a corporate investor. SSC hopes to see more companies coming forward as our partners in sport.” The SSC will “continue to work hand-in-hand with Standard Chartered Bank and our partners” to create more successful SCMS editions over the years, said Mr Lim. “The inaugural Standard Chartered Marathon Singapore 2010 set the bar very high, but Singapore is known for its innovation and service excellence. We plan to have some new twists to make the event even more enjoyable for marathon fans from Singapore, the region and beyond. This is the People’s Race.”

The SCMS attracted a record 60,000 participants in 2010. Details of the SCMS 2011, including the routes, categories for participation are expected to be announced by race organiser SSC towards the end of June 2011. The information will also be available on the Marathon’s website at www.marathonsingapore.com and on www.facebook.com/marathonSG.

Singapore Badminton Open 2011 - Singapore's Shinta Mulia, Yao Lei into last 16

Thursday, 16 June 2011 0 comments

SINGAPORE: Local shuttlers had a mixed start on the first day of the main round of the Li-Ning Singapore Open 2011 badminton championship on Wednesday. Defending women's doubles champions Yao Lei and Shinta Mulia Sari moved into the last 16, but only after a tricky three-set win over England's Mariana Agathangelou and Heather Olver at the Singapore Indoor Stadium. Yao Lei and Shinta, who became the first Singaporeans in 20 years to win a title at the tournament, made a poor start, losing the opening set 21-19, before recovering to take the second set 21-8 to force a rubber, which they won 21-16.

"We were too rushed at the start and we made mistakes. In the second set, we were more patient to see what their weaknesses were," said Shinta. Yao Lei added: "It wasn't an easy match but we kept telling each other not to be distracted and do what we're supposed to do." They will now face eighth seeds Valeri Sorokina and Nina Vislova of Russia on Thursday for a spot in the quarter-finals.

Joining them in action on Thursday will be team-mates Chen Jiayuan and Xing Aiying, who beat England's Jenny Wallwork and Gabrielle White 21-16, 21-9 to reach the last 16. In the women's singles, Singapore's Gu Juan reached the last 16 after edging out Japan's Ayane Kurihara 2-1 (14-21, 21-19, 21-13).

Read More

Derek Jeter - Party of Five makes a regrettable wager

Tuesday, 14 June 2011 0 comments

1. Rap mogul Brian "Baby" Williams, also known as "Birdman," reportedly lost $2 million after betting on the Miami Heat in the NBA Finals. What can we learn from this?

Michael Philbrick: I think we all know that anything involving a slam dunk and a Birdman just don't mix.

Dave Wilson: Well, Birdman reportedly just bought an $8 million Mayback Exelero to add to his $2.1 million Bugatti Veyron and $1.5 million Maybach Landaulet. So it just means he had too much money to begin with.

Jim Caple: Apparently, Birdman is also the financial adviser for the McCourts and Fred Wilpon.

Thomas Neumann: He made a rookie mistake betting big on the NBA Finals. Everyone knows the smart money in South Florida is wagered on youth football.

DJ Gallo: There's a rumor that Mark Cuban's bar tab was $200,000 Sunday night. So I think the lesson is this: try to be a mogul or billionaire; then you can just throw money around like it's nothing. Read More

Derek Jeter Injury: Yankees Star Limps Toward First Base, Leaves Game
Yankees star Derek Jeter limped out of Monday night's game with a sore right calf in the fifth inning, stalling his pursuit of 3,000 career hits.

There was no immediate word on the severity of his injury.

Jeter singled his first time up against Cleveland for his 2,994th hit. He looked fine when he grounded out the next time up and seemed to be having no problems at shortstop.

But the New York captain looked to be having trouble as soon as he hit a fly to right field in the fifth. He was limping with his first step out of the batter's box – he wasn't totally hobbled, though it was noticeable – and jogged down the line. He touched first base after the ball was caught, returned to the dugout and left the game. Read More

Ted Williams .400 Average Long Standing Records Adını Feriha Koydum 23
Ted Williams was the last Major League player to hit .400 in a season and it happened 70 years ago in 1941. That year he hit .406.

In some respect it still is a long standing record as no Major League ball player has been able to sustain the .400 batting mark for an entire season since “the Splendid Splinter” did so. The 1941 season didn’t start well for Williams as he broke a bone in his ankle during spring training that forced Williams to pinch hit for the first two weeks of the season. As Bobby Doer was noted as saying, the injury helped Williams that season as he had to take less pressure of his right leg.

Entering late September with an average of .39955, Williams had the option to sit out the final two games, a doubleheader against Philadelphia. His average would have rounded up to .400, but in true Red Sox fashion, Williams would play because he felt he wouldn’t deserve the .400 achievement had he sat out.

Williams would go 6 for 8 during the doubleheader and not only secure his .400 average, but raise it to .406 for the season; a truly remarkable feat.

Will this long standing record ever be broken? I have to say no. It’s been 70 years and think of some of the best hitters that have come and gone since “Mr. Red Sox” last hit over .400.

A few names come to mind: Mickey Mantle, Rod Carew, Stan Musial, Hank Aaron, Pete Rose, Carl Yastrzemski, Frank Robinson, George Brett, Tony Gwynn, Wade Boggs, Bernie Williams, Larry Walker, Ichiro, Derek Jeter and Joe Mauer. Just a few names of some of the season batting champs in both the American and National leagues since 1941. Read More

SLeague - MaSisulu’s final journey will be poignant occasion

Friday, 10 June 2011 0 comments

ALBERTINA Sisulu’s final journey will begin at her house in Khumalo Street, Orlando East, and follow a route similar to that which her late husband Walter took eight years ago.

MaSisulu’s coffin will be draped in two different flags tomorrow and, at journey’s end, will come to rest in the plot alongside her husband’s grave. The journey from her home in Khumalo Street will begin with the coffin draped in an ANC flag. Cabinet members, high-level ANC members and possibly heads of state will join the procession. As of yesterday, according to ANC spokesman Keith Khoza, Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete had confirmed he was coming. Khoza said other heads of state were expected, and they would know by today.

The military will take ownership of the event at Orlando Stadium, with Master Chief Warrant Officer Johan Scheepers being in charge.

At Orlando Stadium, away from the public’s gaze, the ANC flag will be replaced by a South African flag. The coffin will then be slow-marched into the stadium. It is here where President Jacob Zuma will speak. From Orlando Stadium, the procession will snake its way to Croesus cemetery in Bosmont.

When the coffin is over the grave, a small South African flag will be handed to the family. The army chaplain will give the service, and once the Last Post has been played, the military will end their commitment and the family will take charge.

Today, the soldiers taking part in the state funeral will be going through their final rehearsal.

“If everything goes smoothly, I will be more relaxed,” Scheepers said. MaSisulu’s funeral will take place from 9am tomorrow. It will be televised live on SABC2 and on eNews. Read More

poland vs france, jean marie cantona, sylvain marveaux

Poland vs France Preview ; Zinedine Zidane has called for new France sensation Marvin Martin to be "left in peace". The French legend's comments come after Martin's two-goal debut against Ukraine earlier this week led to suggestions that the national team finally had a successor to the 1998 World Cup-winning playmaker.

Martin came off the substitutes' bench to score a brace in the 4-1 win in Donetsk on Monday and could be set for further action when Laurent Blanc's team take on the other Euro 2012 co-hosts Poland in Warsaw on Thursday.

His display brought back memories of the great Zidane's debut against the Czech Republic in 1994, when he too scored twice after coming off the bench.

But the former Real Madrid star tried to ease some of the hype surrounding Martin as he told Le Parisien: "There have often been comparisons made with me. This is nothing new, we have already done this in the past and with (Michel) Platini also. That said, I think this player has a future, although there are also some others.

"I think we should actually leave him alone and let him be himself. What matters is not so much the goals he scored but his 20 minutes of play, but he would not try to be Zidane because there's only one Zidane. I hope he will be a good number 10, but this requires for him to be left in peace."

Arsenal midfielder Samir Nasri trained apart from the main group with one of the French team physios on Tuesday, while Cedric Carrasso, Mathieu Valbuena, Guillaume Hoarau and Charles N'Zogbia are expected to start having not featured at all either in the Ukraine friendly or the Euro 2012 qualifier against Belarus last Friday.

Lille midfielder Ludovic Obraniak is set to line up against Les Bleus, having been born and brought up in France. The 26-year-old, who has a Polish grandfather, admitted he had problems initially in winning over the sceptics, having made his debut for Poland in August 2009. He told L'Equipe: "It was not easy, but it helped that I scored twice in my first match (against Greece in a friendly).

"It gave me credibility because nobody knew me there. When you do not speak the language, it's as if you were a foreigner. There are some who saw me as a direct competitor, others who have criticised me for snatching the place of another. "That caused some small tensions in the beginning, but today [Wednesday] I am integrated, I'm working, I'm learning Polish and I try to speak as much as possible in that language."

Obraniak, as a player who came through the French youth system before representing another country at senior level, poured scorn on the idea floated in a meeting of senior French Football Federation officials to adopt a quota limiting dual-nationality youngsters entering the national academy.

"You cannot blame someone who does not play for France to choose to defend his country of origin," Obraniak said.

"For me, it's an unsolvable problem. And do not forget that if these famous 'quotas' had been imposed a few years ago, France would perhaps have missed out on great players. Zidane is of Algerian origin, Platini of Italian origin ... This discussion has raised many problems and ultimately not achieved much." Read More

Manchester United set to complete £16m deal for Blackburn's Phil Jones
Manchester United have won the race to sign Blackburn's England under-21 defender Phil Jones in a deal understood to be worth £16m.

The centre-back, 19, will undergo medical tests at United's training ground before signing a five-year contract. Jones, who made his Premier League debut in March last year, played 28 times last season despite being hampered by injuries, and is part of England's European Under-21 Championship squad.

He signed a five-year deal at Ewood Park in February, but that included a release clause setting his value at £16m. He had been linked with both Liverpool and Arsenal before opting to join United. Read More

On one side of the pitch at the Jalan Besar Stadium, the likes of Daniel Bennett, Hariss Harun, Lionel Lewis and Aleksandar Duric - along with most of the Lions' old guard - were engaged in various attack-versus-defence drills. But Singapore football coach Radojko Avramovic (picture) was standing at the penalty spot at the other end, away from the players who are likely to form his first XI when the Lions lineup in the second round of the FIFA World Cup qualifiers (July 23 and 28) against the winners of the Malaysia-Taiwan match.

Barking instructions and correcting players' positional mistakes, the Serb cast a keen eye on the new members of his 33-strong squad. While the gulf in standards was apparent in last Friday's "friendly" match that saw the old guard beat the new recruits 6-0, the Serb was pleased with what he had seen so far from the fresh-faced hopefuls. Speaking to MediaCorp ahead of yesterday's 90-minute training session, he said: "I'm really happy with them … it's very encouraging to see that all, not just the new players, are trying their best in training and that's really important."

Singapore face the Maldives in a friendly tomorrow at Jalan Besar, in the first of a couple of matches the younger players will have to lay their claim for a spot in the final 22-man squad for the World Cup qualifiers.

A friendly against Laos is lined up for June 18, while the Kuwait Olympic team will face a Singapore selection - made up of under-23 players and some older ones - on June 13, to give Avramovic another look at players outside his original list. "This game against Maldives, and the other friendlies, is important to help me decide who will make the final list for the World Cup qualifiers. I generally know what my first XI will look like but the big question is, are these players ready? I'm not sure about the fitness levels, because in the second half of the match (on Friday) the tempo of the game dropped in the last 20 minutes," said the 61-year-old.

Yesterday's workout indicated that Avramovic may already have decided on his defensive line up. Hariss looks set to partner Bennett in the heart of defence, while Juma'at Jantan and Ismail Yunos will slot in as fullbacks, with Lewis in goal. Avramovic's biggest headache now is finding at least two more games for his charges before lining up against the winners of the Malaysia-Taiwan tie.

"We're still trying to find opponents for June 29 and July 3 but some countries have their own qualifiers to play on those FIFA dates for international games, and others already have prior commitments," he said. The Maldives team has been in good form of late and are garnered some good results in the AFC Challenge Cup 2012. Maldives Coach Diego Andres Cruciani played down his team’s unbeaten run and asserted that his team is looking forward to the match tomorrow evening. Cruciani said: “We have only had two days to prepare and I do not know much about the Singapore team so we will go out there and do our best.”

Several Courts Young Lions' players were absent from training yesterday, having been given the day off in lieu of the national under-23 team's impending training tour of Sydney (June 8-15), while Tanjong Pagar defender Delwinder Singh is back with his club to prepare for today's fixture against Albirex Niigata. But the most significant absentee was Persiba Balikpapan's Khairul Amri, who is yet to be released by the Indonesian club despite FIFA's ruling that players must be freed at least 48 hours before officially-sanctioned international fixtures...

Read More

li na, maria sharapova, na li, azarenka, victoria azarenka, sharapova

Wednesday, 1 June 2011 0 comments

After two days of upsets in the women's draw, Maria Sharapova made serene progress into the fourth round of the French Open as the top seeds avoided any further humiliation in Paris.

After seeing Kim Clijsters, Caroline Wozniacki and Sam Stosur fall by the wayside this week, Sharapova was keen to avoid a similar fate, and she wasted little time in sealing her place in the last-16 with a 6-2 6-3 victory over world No. 129 Yung-Jan Chan.

With the three other major titles already in her possession, Sharapova is bidding to complete the set in Paris this week, and may already have one eye on the final after seeing the draw open up.

Sharapova will take on Agnieszka Radwanska for a place in the quarter-finals after the Pole ended Yanina Wickmayer's French Open challenge with a 6-4 6-4 victory.

Fourth seed Victoria Azarenka is one player who could stop Sharapova, after the Belarusian shrugged off the challenge of clay-court specialist Roberta Vinci with a 6-3 6-2 win to underline her status as the new favourite to clinch the title next weekend.

Azarenka will now face Elena Makarova, who saw off Kaia Kanepi in straight sets, while Australian Open finalist Li Na needed just 61 minutes to seal a 6-2 6-2 win over Sorana Cirstea on Court Suzanne Lenglen.

Next up for Li is Madrid Open champion Petra Kvitova, who also wasted little time as she strode into the last-16 with a straight-sets win over Elena Baltacha's victor Vania King. Kvitova dropped her serve three times but was too strong for the American as the No. 9 seed sealed a 6-4 6-2 win. Read More
